Oakdale Park Christian Reformed Church's Missionaries

Oakdale Park Church has a long history of reaching out to a hurting world in Jesus' Name.  There was a time when the church had more than 20 missionaries it supported in various parts of the world.  They were all pictured on a wall in the church.   At that time the members of Oakdale pretty much lived right around the church and most people walked to church.  As our neighborhood changed, we realized the Lord would have us also reach out to our community for Jesus' sake.

Our neighborhood outreach is ongoing and quite extensive, involving a commitment on the part of  a great number of members of Oakdale.  But Oakdale never forgot to support also the work of missions beyond our immediate community.  There is a general belief that God would not have us withdraw our support of missionaries and dedicate all our effort to neighborhood evangelism.  We believe He would have us do both. This understanding has been reinforced by the fact that many of our members have become missionaries.  How could we not support those of our own body who go to serve in various places of the world?

At the present time Oakdale is supporting six missionaries.   These missionaries are in Mexico; The Philippines; North Carolina; The Dominican Republic; Detroit, Michigan; and Ionia, Michigan.  Each month (usually the last Sunday) an offering is taken for a specific missionary.  On that Sunday the work of this missionary is highlighted and special prayers are offered.

Oakdale has a Mission Committee composed of five members which meets twice a year to review each missionary and pray for that missionary's work.  To keep the congregation informed, a special card is distributed to the congregation in early December with pertinent information about each missionary.  This card contains the missionary's address, email, blog, telephone number, birthdays of each family member, and anniversary of each couple.  The purpose is to update our members concerning changes and to encourage them to keep in touch with our missionaries.

Oakdale's Core Values Statement says that we ought to use all that God has given us collectively to further God's kingdom, that Oakdale is committed to reaching out with the love of Christ to those who do not yet know him, and that we rely on God to work in our world in response to prayer.  Our church believes that by reaching out to a needy world we are doing what God asks us to do for Jesus' sake.
