Pain

Being a kid is not easy. Don’t believe the lies that tell us otherwise. There are growing pains and insecurities. There are also a lot of unknowns about what lies ahead. I remember experiencing some of that pain as a kid, and sometimes people would say to me, “Oh, just enjoy this time! You will never have the chance to live it again!” I remember thinking in my head, “Thank God I never have to live through this again!.”

Sometimes we have a hard time understanding how other people experience life. We are limited by the bodies and minds that we live in. It can be easy to think that we understand but much more challenging to actually understand what others are seeing and hearing and feeling. But following Jesus entails seeking to know others the ways that God knows us. We are not God, so we will never achieve this the way that God does, but if we walk in Jesus’ footsteps, we can have a taste of it.

Pray that God will help you understand others, and their pain, in better ways, so that you might be an agent of healing in their lives.

This week’s devotions are based on the book Word by Word: A Daily Spiritual Practice by Marilyn McEntyre. Eerdmans, Grand Rapids. 2016.
